Entrepreneurial success should not be limited to financial metrics. It includes personal fulfilment, customer satisfaction, and more. Read how focusing on a well-rounded definition leads to a fulfilling and sustainable business journey.
As an entrepreneur, it can be easy to fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others. During a particularly challenging time in my own business journey, I found myself struggling with motivation. I was comparing my revenue and success to that of my peers who seemed to be doing much better than me, and to my competitors who seemed to be thriving in their businesses.
As I researched whether I was on the right track, to get some motivation, I mostly came across the idea that the success of the entrepreneur is heavily tied to the business’ financial success. This can be discouraging, especially if the business is not performing well financially. The time, effort, and resources I invested made it even harder to handle. The emphasis on financial success made me feel like other factors like personal fulfilment, customer satisfaction, and community impact were being ignored.
This led to a sense of failure, as if I was not meeting my own standards or the expectations of others. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that success is personal and subjective, and financial success is just one aspect of it.
Unlike traditional careers, there is no clear career trajectory or set path for growth. It can be challenging to determine how you’re doing in your business, versus how your business is doing.
It’s something I wish I had known when I first started my business, as it would have helped me navigate the uncertainty of entrepreneurship.
It’s worth noting that these are not the only measures of entrepreneurial metrics and some may have different levels of accuracy and reliability.
Habits play a crucial role in our success as entrepreneurs. They are the foundation of our daily routine and can help us stay on track, even when we encounter challenges.
Habits also give us structure and routine, which is essential for productivity. When we establish habits, we know that certain things will be taken care of, no matter what. For example, waking up and doing yoga, journaling, or planning our day at a specific time.
To measure the progress of our habits, we can track them on a daily basis. For example, we can ask ourselves, “How many days this week did I do yoga?”. This simple approach allows us to understand if we’re staying consistent with our habits and if we’re making progress.
We can also identify patterns and understand when we fell off the wagon, for example, when we were sick.
Be aware that when we are out of our usual environment, it can be hard to maintain our habits. That’s why it’s crucial to build habits that are sustainable and easy to maintain, even when we face unexpected challenges.
Habits show discipline and encourage confidence, which are essential for success as an entrepreneur.
Measuring the impact we have on others helps us understand how our work is received and perceived by our clients, partners, and other people we interact with.
This can be measured through client interactions, for example, asking them how likely they are to work with us again on a scale of 1-10, or what the most significant impact of our work on them was. It could be something as simple as saving them money or improving their revenue.
Another way to measure impact is by asking for recommendations. This is not only a way to get feedback on our work but also a way to expand our network and grow our business. It’s important to follow up on recommendations, and ensure that the person recommending us is being true to their word.
By measuring the impact we have on others, we can understand how we’re making a difference in the lives of those we interact with and how we can improve our work to make an even bigger impact.
Resilience refers to the ability to withstand stress, adapt to change, and quickly recover from setbacks or challenges.
It is often described as “the ability to bounce back” from stressors and difficult situations. It’s a combination of mental, emotional and physical traits that allows us to cope with adversity and maintain a positive outlook.
When looking at resilience, we can take a quarterly approach and consolidate our challenges, look for lessons, and recommit ourselves to moving forward.
One way to measure resilience is by tracking the number of challenges faced and the lessons learned from them. By consolidating these challenges, we can get a sense of their resilience and identify patterns.
This can be done by reflecting on the setbacks and failures, understanding what went wrong and what can be improved.
It’s vital to look for lessons and not just dwell on the negative aspects.
This reflects our ability to adapt and make changes when things don’t work out.
It’s important to understand that resilience doesn’t mean ignoring challenges, but rather, facing them head-on and finding ways to overcome them. By measuring resilience, we can understand their ability to bounce back and make progress in the face of challenges.
Measuring learning and growth is an essential aspect of our success,, to continuously learn and grow in order to improve and advance in our business.
There are different ways to measure learning and growth, for example:
A further way to measure learning and growth is by keeping a journal of wins and failures. This allows us to reflect on our experiences, understand what worked and what didn’t, and learn from our mistakes. By tracking how many articles, podcasts, books, and courses we consume, we can measure how much we’re learning and growing. We can also document what we’ve learned, and reflect on how it has helped us improve our business.
By measuring our learning and growth, we can see the progress we’ve made, understand what we know now, and identify areas where we need to improve. It’s important to continuously seek out new learning opportunities to stay current, grow our skillset and improve our chances of success.
Finding a balance between work and personal life is necessary to ensure that we’re not burning out and can maintain our wellbeing.
To measure work-life balance, we can calculate the ratio of work to life that we feel comfortable with, and then track their progress in maintaining that balance.
Firstly, we should set a desired ratio of work-to-life, for example, 50/50 or 70/30, and then track our work hours and life hours.
We can then compare your calendar to our desired ratio and see if it aligns. Then, make necessary adjustments if it doesn’t.
When measuring work-life balance, the hours of sleep should not be counted as “life hours.” Life hours should be focused on activities that bring us joy, that are revitalising, and that allow us to come into work fully present and energised.
This way, we can have a balance that gives us the energy to focus on our work and also allow us to have a full life.
To measure our satisfaction or fulfilment level, we can rate our level of satisfaction on a scale of one to ten at the end of each day.
This allows us to reflect on their day and evaluate how we felt about the work and activities we engaged in. By tracking this data over time, we can get a sense of their overall satisfaction level and identify patterns.
We can also set goals to improve their satisfaction level and take action to make changes in our work or personal life that will increase our overall fulfilment.
By measuring this, it will give us the baseline of how we’ve been feeling, i.e. whether we are more satisfied than dissatisfied.
If it’s the latter, we can then evaluate the reason behind it and make necessary changes.
Meaningful relationships through networking and building connections can lead to more work, recommendations, and opportunities.
To measure meaningful relationships, we can track our conversations and interactions with clients, partners, and stakeholders that are impactful.
One way to measure meaningful relationships is by counting the number of impactful engagements per week, month, or day. This can be done by reflecting on meetings, interactions, and conversations that were particularly powerful or meaningful.
We can also track the number of new connections made in a certain period and evaluate the quality of those relationships because meaningful relationships aren’t just about the amount of connections.
Measuring our level of creativity allows us to evaluate the level of innovation in our work and personal life. Creativity is the ability to think outside of the box and come up with new ideas and solutions.
To measure our level of creativity, we can track the time spent on brainstorming activities, and how many new, good quality ideas were generated as a result.
This can be done by reflecting on our daily routine and identifying moments when we are thinking creatively. We can also track the number of new ideas implemented in a certain period, and evaluate the impact of those ideas on our business and personal life.
A good level of creativity that keeps us from getting bored with what we’re doing. Ideally we want a balance between implementing new ideas and sticking to a routine that works.
Our level of autonomy is how much control we have over the direction of our business and the ability to make our own decisions and take charge of our own life.
To measure our level of autonomy, we can track the number of decisions we make each week, and compare it to the number of decisions made based on input from others.
This can be done by reflecting on our decision-making process and identifying moments when we are relying on input from others. We can also track the impact of the decisions we make, and evaluate the extent to which they align with our values, goals, and vision.
Seeking input and guidance from others is important, but it’s also wise to have a balance between making our own decisions and seeking input from others.
Measuring confidence can be a bit tricky, but one way to do it is by paying attention to how often we second-guess ourselves. This can include things like changing decisions or strategies that we have previously felt confident about.
Another way to measure confidence is by looking at consistency in our actions or decisions. For example, if we’ve had the same logo for a long time or consistently received positive feedback about a certain aspect of our business, it’s likely that we have a certain level of confidence in it. Additionally, paying attention to our gut feeling and staying consistent in our beliefs and values can also indicate a high level of confidence as an entrepreneur.
Emotional codependency is a pattern of behaviour where we rely on another person for our emotional wellbeing, causing an unhealthy and unequal dynamic in the relationship.
One way to measure this is by paying attention to how often we feel the need to have conversations or seek validation from others.
A good indicator of emotional independence is the ability to let go of the need to convince others of our decisions and rely on our own process.
Additionally, recognising that the only people you really need to convince are our potential clients and not everyone else in your life can also help to reduce emotional codependency.
Maintaining good physical, mental, and emotional health is essential for overall wellbeing
One example of measuring physical health is by paying attention to habits that may be physically taxing on the body, causing things like headaches or backaches. Keeping track of how often these occur, as well as how many days in a row we wake up without them, can be a good way to measure physical health and show us when to seek medical help.
Mental health can be measured by practising mindfulness and paying attention to our feelings. Keeping track of how fluctuations in mood occur and the reasons behind them can help us to identify patterns and areas that need improvement.
Emotional health can be often overlooked. It’s important to pay attention to our emotional state, whether it’s positive or negative. Writing down our emotions can help us understand trends and aspects that need improvement.
Being aware of our health and taking steps to improve it can help us navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
Measuring entrepreneur success solely based on financial targets is not a complete or accurate picture.
It’s necessary to also consider personal wellbeing aspects such as learning and growth, resilience, work-life balance, satisfaction levels, meaningful relationships, creativity and autonomy, confidence and emotional codependency, physical, mental and emotional health.
By taking these factors into account, we can have a more holistic understanding of our progress and success, and make adjustments as needed to improve our overall wellbeing and satisfaction. We should be prioritising their own wellbeing in order to achieve sustainable success in the long-term.
